Beware: Simple Household Chores Can Cause Injuries
Posted by Dennis Mundt on

Taking care of household chores can result in injuries or trigger flare-ups of pre-existing health problems.
Many everyday tasks, such as yardwork, require repetitive motions that can cause nerve and tendon pain, as well as short- and long-term injuries.
Cooking: Sharp knives, hot liquids, and slamming kitchen drawers can all cause cuts, burns, and fractures in the kitchen.
Accidents involving power tools, such as saws and lawnmowers, can result in ER visits for everything from cut hands to severed fingers.
Cleaning: You repeat the same motions when vacuuming, mopping, or cleaning ceiling fans.
Tingling, numbness, muscle pain, and joint pain are all symptoms of repetitive motion injuries.
Raking leaves, clipping hedges, weeding, and cutting tree branches all require repetitive motions that can strain neck, arm, shoulder, and back muscles, as well as irritate tendons and ligaments.
If you're pricked by a thorn or scratched by a branch, these seemingly minor wounds can become direct entry points for fungus or bacteria, which can lead to more serious problems.
Using step stools and ladders: You can use a step stool or a ladder to reach hard-to-reach areas.
Dull blades can cause injury by causing sudden movements.
Never use your palm as a cutting board and always cut away from yourself.
When cutting avocados, this is how many people get hurt.
Instead of reaching up high with a step stool, keep items you use frequently on lower shelves to avoid falls.
If you need to reach something or clean a high spot with a step stool or ladder, have someone hold the ladder while you use it.
When doing yardwork, wear gloves to protect your hands, fingers, and wrists from cuts.
Avoid anything that makes you drowsy or impairs judgment if you're working with sharp blades or power tools.
Similarly, if your fingers are popping or locking, you should see your doctor right away.
